Help wanted: Google hiring in 2011: "2010 was a huge year for Google. Many of our big bets—on mobile, display advertising, the cloud and more—really started to pay off. Amazingly, Android now runs on over 100 devices with more than 300,000 activations each day. Chrome has at least 120 million active users and it’s growing quickly. Last year more than 1 million businesses switched to Google Apps and embraced its 100% web approach. And we’ve made search faster than ever, even when you’re on the go.

But it wasn’t just a growth year for our products—the company grew as well. In 2010 we added more than 4,500 Googlers, primarily in engineering and sales: second only to 2007 when we added over 6,000 people to Google.

I love Google because of our people. It's inspiring to be part of the team. And that's why I am excited about 2011—because it will be our biggest hiring year in company history. A few days ago, I showed you how to physically install a second hard drive into your system, and today we will be looking at the software side of that.

Even if you didn’t crack open the case and add in another drive, you might still want to read on if you’d like to learn about the drive management system in Windows, and what partitions are.

Background – Partitions, and Filesystems

I’ll be throwing around some fairly technical terms today so it’s important you have an overview of what all these terms mean.

To begin with, a partition is a block of space on a hard drive. In Windows terms, you might think of a partition as a single drive letter (like C: or D:). Windows also likes to refer to a partition as a “volume“, but they are the same thing for our purposes. A single hard drive may consist of one, or many partitions – each of which will be assigned their own drive letter in Windows. For most people, a single partition is enough – however most home computers actually have another partition, hidden from Windows, on which recovery programs are placed. If your computer has a message like “Press F2 to enter recovery mode” when you turn it on, chances are you have a secret partition. Some people like to partition their drive so that Windows runs from a small section of the disk, with the data stored on an entirely separate partition – this means that re-installing Windows won’t overwrite your data. In other cases, a hard drive is partitioned in order to allow multiple operating systems to be installed at the same time – on booting the computer, you can then choose which partition you will boot from.

A Filesystem is the particular method by which data is stored on that partition. Which filesystem to choose has been known to cause violent arguments among many geeks, but suffice to say Windows XP used FAT32, Windows 7 uses NTFS, and Linux and Macs use something different entirely. Each filesystem has limitations and advantages, but for our purposes it is useful to know just that:

(a) If you’re planning on dealing with large files (like 4+ GB movies, etc.) you should use NTFS.

(b) If you want to swap drives between systems, you should use FAT32 as Mac OS X cannot write to NTFS without additional software, but you won’t be able to deal with large files.

If you’ve installed a second drive into your Windows machine, I suggest you use NTFS. To make matters more difficult though, a lot of drives come pre-formatted as FAT32 – grrr, what a headache!

Partitioning and Formatting Your Drive in Windows

Launch the disk management app by clicking Start, and typing in diskmgmt.msc – click the application that pops up in the search results. You should see a screen similar to this:

The top half of the display shows what partitions currently exist. The bottom half displays the physical devices – the drives – in your computer. In this case, I have a single 64 GB NTFS partition, which is my C: drive where Windows is currently installed. Beneath it, we have my new 50 GB drive, shown in black because it is currently all free space. Your setup may different though – Windows 7 often creates a 100 MB hidden partiton called “System Reserved” for recovery options, for instance. Note, if you drive came preformatted as a FAT32 partition, Windows may have already assigned a drive letter to it. Make sure you identify exactly which is the new disk.

You can perform various operations on the partition, or the empty space, by right-clicking on it.

If you have an existing FAT32 partition you want to get rid of (be very sure this is the new second drive and not something else), then simply right-click on the existing volume and choose either Format or Delete Volume. Choose Format if you’d simply like to make it into a fresh NTFS partition instead of FAT32. Choose Delete Volume if you’d like to make more than one partition on the drive – for example, one for music and one for movies. You can also choose Change Drive Letter and Paths if you’d just like to change the letter that Windows has automatically assigned it.

Now, having deleted your existing partition or if there wasn’t one to start with, we can go about creating a new one. Right-click on the black empty space to create a new partition by choosing New Simple Volume.

You’ll be greeted by a standard wizard opening screen, and after clicking Next, you can choose how large you partition will be. 1 GB is roughly 1000 MB. The default setting will already be the maximum size, but in this case I’m going to split the drive into two 25 GB partitions (25000 MB) to store different kinds of data.

On the next screen, you can assign it a drive letter. Choose NTFS as the format and give it a suitable name so you can identify the drive. You can then repeat the process by clicking on the remaining Unallocated free space. If it’s the last partition you are making, just leave the size option at the default to use all remaining space. Now you should have some more drives, so check Computer from the Start Menu to see:

I hope you’ve learnt a little about disks and partitions today. They might seem scary and somewhat high level at first, but in reality they’re quite simple. So long as you are careful about what you’re deleting, managing your own disks and partitions is a lot more rewarding than simply taking the options that the manufacturers give to you.

There are also some alternatives to the built in Drive Management application that you might want to consider – like the Free Partition Manager, or Paragon suite of tools.

15 Aspiring Musicians Who Found Fame Through YouTube [VIDEOS]: "

Thanks to the wonders of social media, nowadays talent scouts are more likely to find the next big thing online than at the mall. While MySpace was once the place to be discovered, video-sharing uber-site YouTube has since taken over as the wannabe pop star’s place to post.

Whether you’re an indie kid, a pop princess or a rising rocker, it seems pretty clear that uploading your performances to YouTube might well pay off — it certainly did for the folks in the video gallery below.

Here we bring you 15 talented uploaders who found fame via the video sharing site. However, this is not an exhaustive list by any means, so please share any artists you like that made it thanks to YouTube in the comments below.

1. Avery

Teen star Avery was a big YouTube hit in 2010 with both covers and original material. The latter netted her a Universal record contract (supposedly following a bidding war) after her videos were viewed by A&R folks.

2. Alyssa Bernal

Alyssa Bernal’s acoustic uploads got the attention of Pharrell Williams who was reportedly so keen to track her down, he contacted her high school. Eventually he got hold of her and signed her to Star Trak. She has since released an EP.

3. Justin Bieber

As many of you will know, Justin Bieber's pre-pubescent warblings were spotted by a talent scout who arranged for Bieber to meet with Usher. The rest, of course, is now history.

4. Ysabella Brave

Quirky vocalist Ysabella Brave was signed to Warner Music Group's digital label Cordless after her popular YouTube performances got her noticed.

5. Greyson Chance

Ellen DeGeneres championed young Greyson Chance after seeing his cover of a Lady Gaga song at a school recital on YouTube. After having him on her show, DeGeneres made Chance the first artist signed to her new record label. His debut single came out in October last year.

6. Esmee Denters

Justin Timberlake is the star sponsor behind Dutch singer-songwriter Esmee Denters. He spotted her on the site and she became the first artist to sign to his label. Denters is now working on her second album.

7. Dondria

So So Def Recordings founder Jermaine Dupri discovered Dondria on YouTube and offered her a record deal. Her debut album Dondria vs Phatfffat reached number 14 on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs Chart.

8. Kim Yeo-Hee

Kim Yeo-Hee, known on YouTube as Apple Girl, became popular with her covers played on iPhones. After viral success, record labels from South Korea, China and the UK attempted to woo Yeo-Hee and in the end she signed with Seoul-based Dreamhigh-Ent.

9. Andy McKee

Back in 2006, YouTube got Andy McKee seriously noticed - noticed to the tune of 35 million views. With a new album, Joyland, out last year, McKee is now on tour.

10. Terra Naomi

'Say It's Possible' was the song that opened doors for Terra Naomi. A YouTube hit, she signed with Island Records in 2006, although she is now back to being independent with a fan-funded record in the works.

11. Julia Nunes

Julia Nunes, or “jaaaaaaa” as her YouTube fans know her, shot to online fame after posting videos of her singing covers and originals and playing the ukulele. Nunes has made three independent albums and opened for Ben Folds.

12. Chantelle Redman

UK teenager Chantelle Redman owes her YouTube success to her father who secretly filmed her singing and posted it on the video sharing site. After becoming the second most subscribed singer on the site, she signed a record deal with Agency Global Enterprises and has since released a single.

13. Ria Ritchie

Ria Ritchie’s story will sound familiar by now. After recording acoustic covers and uploading them to YouTube, she got spotted by UK musician Plan B who is producing her first album.

14. Mia Rose

Portuguese-British Mia Rose began uploading her music to YouTube in 2006. She was signed in 2007, has seen success in the UK and Portugal and has since moved to Los Angeles to further her career.

15. Cody Simpson

Twelve-year-old Cody Simpson (inevitably dubbed the Australian Justin Bieber) was spotted on YouTube by Shawn Campbell, a record producer who has worked with the likes of Jay-Z and Missy Elliott. Since signed to Atlantic Records, Simpson’s first single featuring Flo Rida was released last summer.

When the Federal Trade Commission announced late last year that it was investigating ways to protect consumers' privacy, it suggested a 'Do Not Track' option for every browser. This would give users the ability to opt out of online advertising - an effort akin to the 'Do Not Call' registry, from that bygone era where solicitations came via the phone rather than pop-up ads.

In response, both Mozilla and Google have announced changes to their respective browsers todays, with the addition of 'Do Not Track' features for Firefox and Chrome.

Firefox & "Do Not Track"

According to Global Privacy and Public Policy Leader at Mozilla, Alex Fowler, the new Firefox feature will allow users to set a preference that will broadcast their desire to opt out of ad-based tracking. This will be signalled via a Do Not Track HTTP header with every page view or click they make. 'We believe the header-based approach has the potential to be better for the web in the long run because it is a clearer and more universal opt-out mechanism than cookies or blacklists.'

Fowler says that this effort is an improvement on cookie-based solutions as it's more persistent and doesn't require a user loading lists of ad networks and advertisers for it to work.

The challenge, of course, with the header is that it requires both the browser and websites to recognize and implement the opt-out. 'Mozilla recognizes the chicken and egg problem,' says Fowler, 'and we are taking the step of proposing that this feature be considered for upcoming releases of Firefox.'

Chrome & Keep My Opt-Outs

For its part, Google has announced Keep My Opt-Outs, its stab at addressing the new FTC suggestions. Keep My Opt Outs is a Chrome extension that enables you to opt out permanently from ad tracking cookies.

Unlike the Firefox solution that uses the HTTP header, Chrome's answer does rely on cookies and ad networks. But the extension does address the problem that you face when and if you ever clear your browser's cookies - that you lose all your customized settings, including any site you've opted out of. The new extension for Chrome will keep that opt-out permanently.

There are also granular controls for cookies in Chrome, and Google says it's modified its browser's incognito mode to ensure that all cookies, including 'Flash cookies' can be blocked. Once you download the extension, you can check your privacy settings here.

Privacy: The New Browser Battle

Microsoft unveiled its plans for a 'Do Not Track' feature for IE9 back in December, shortly after the FTC made its announcement about online privacy. So arguably, Mozilla and Google are both playing catch up to Microsoft here.

In a statement, FTC Chairman Jon Leibowitz praised the moves, 'Mozilla's initiative is to be commended. It recognizes that consumers want a choice about who is tracking their movements online, and it's a first step toward giving consumers choice about who will have access to their data. It also signals that Do Not Track options are technically feasible.'

The response to Google's announcement, however, seemed less favorable. In fact, The New York Times cites an FTC spokesperson saying, 'We're pleased that Google is engaged in the process, but Mozilla and Microsoft are clearly steps ahead.'

It wasn’t hard to predict that this year’s Consumer Electronics Show would be all about consumer tablets — Apple’s iPad carved out a new product segment that manufacturers around the world are now hell-bent on saturating. When all was said and done and the smoke cleared, however, there weren’t many people who guessed that CES would actually bring us over 100 new slate-form devices. Ranging in size from a minuscule 4-inch Panasonic tablet to the excessive dual 14-inch displays found on Kno’s 6-pound clamshell offering, we saw just about every size and shape accounted for at the show. As an homage to the borderline ridiculous number of tablets unveiled at CES 2011, CEA Chief Economist and Director of Research Shawn DuBravac slapped them all into one gigantic table. Schedule for Week of January 23rd: "The key economic report for the coming week is the Q4 advance GDP report to be released on Friday. There are also two important housing reports to be released early in the week: Case-Shiller house prices on Tuesday, and New Home sales on Wednesday. There is also a two day FOMC meeting ending on Wednesday.

Morning: Moody's/REAL Commercial Property Price Index (CPPI) for November.



----- Tuesday, Jan 25th -----

9:00 AM: S&P/Case-Shiller Home Price Index for November. Although this is the November report, it is really a 3 month average of September, October and November. The consensus is for prices to decline about 1.0% in November; the fifth straight month of house price declines.



This graph shows the seasonally adjusted Composite 10 and Composite 20 indices through October (the Composite 20 was started in January 2000).



Prices are falling again, although still above the lows set in early 2009. The Composite 20 index should be close to the post-bubble low in November.



10:00 AM Regional and State Employment and Unemployment (Monthly) for December 2010



10:00 AM: Richmond Fed Survey of Manufacturing Activity for January. The consensus is for the index to be slightly lower than last month at 22 (above zero is expansion).



10:00 AM: 10:00 FHFA House Price Index for November. This is based on GSE repeat sales and is no longer as closely followed as Case-Shiller (or CoreLogic).



10:00 AM: Conference Board's consumer confidence index for January. The consensus is for an increase to 54.2 from 52.5 last month.



9:00 PM: 2011 State of the Union Address



----- Wednesday, Jan 26th -----

7:00 AM: The Mortgage Bankers Association (MBA) will release the mortgage purchase applications index. This index increased slightly at the end of last year, and has declined slightly early this year.



10:00 AM: New Home Sales for December from the Census Bureau. The consensus is for an increase in sales to 300 thousand (SAAR) in December from 290 thousand in November.



This graph shows New Home Sales since 1963. The dashed line is the current sales rate.



New home sales collapsed in May and have averaged only 289 thousand (SAAR) over the last seven months. Prior to the last seven months, the record low was 338 thousand in Sept 1981.



2:15 PM: FOMC Meeting Announcement. No changes are expected to either interest rates or QE2.



----- Thursday, Jan 27th -----

8:30 AM: The initial weekly unemployment claims report will be released. The number of initial claims has been trending down over the last few months. The consensus is for a slight increase to 409 thousand compared to 404 thousand last week.



8:30 AM ET: Chicago Fed National Activity Index (December). This is a composite index of other data.



8:30 AM: Durable Goods Orders for December from the Census Bureau. The consensus is for a 1.5% decrease in durable goods orders after decreasing 1.3% in November.



10:00 AM: Pending Home Sales Index for December. The consensus is for a 1% increase in contracts signed. It usually takes 45 to 60 days to close, so this will provide an early indication of closings in February.



11:00 AM: Kansas City Fed regional Manufacturing Survey for January. The index was at 21 in December.



----- Friday, Jan 28th -----

8:30 AM: Q4 GDP (advance release). This is the advance release from the BEA, and the consensus is that real GDP increased 3.5% annualized in Q4.



9:55 AM: Reuter's/University of Michigan's Consumer sentiment index (final for January). The consensus is for an increase to 73.1 from the preliminary reading of 72.7.
